While there are many battery manufacturers, including some focused on off\u2011road machinery, AGCO Power\u2019s goal is to enable the electrification of agriculture with cost\u2011effective, fit\u2011for\u2011purpose solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cA battery is an expensive component, so we want to design it ourselves. That way we can influence cost and make economically sound choices. More importantly, we can apply our deep understanding of tractors and agricultural requirements to the battery\u2019s design,\u201d says <strong>Juha Heikkil\u00e4<\/strong>, Head of Battery Technology R&amp;D at AGCO Power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>AGCO Power designs batteries specifically for agricultural machines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The new AGCO Power concept battery shown at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agcopower.com\/agritechnica\/\">Agritechnica<\/a> is intended as the power source for a small tractor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safety in extreme operating conditions and packaging within the physical constraints of a tractor are key design starting points.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to Heikkil\u00e4, fully electric tractors are, for now, best suited to lighter agricultural tasks that do not require continuous high power or long uninterrupted operating hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electric powertrains offer clear advantages in work machines, such as lower operating costs, an almost maintenance\u2011free driveline, and the use of new electric implements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>You can\u2019t design a tractor around a battery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Requirements in agriculture differ markedly from those in on\u2011road e\u2011mobility and many other work machines. A new passenger car can, in practice, be designed around the battery. In buses or trucks, there is often plenty of room available for battery packs.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA tractor, by contrast, cannot be designed to the battery\u2019s dictates. Space is constrained by factors we cannot change: at the front, room is needed for a loader; at the rear, for a 3\u2011point hitch or backhoe; and there are standardized mounting points for implements. The battery, designed by AGCO Power, contains a total of 1,400 cells and offers 150 kWh of capacity.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>In agriculture, batteries face tough usability requirement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The capacity of AGCO Power\u2019s concept battery is 150 kWh, and it is designed for a tractor with an electric motor in the sub-100 kW power class. The technical concept selects NMC chemistry for strong energy density and charging performance, combined with cylindrical cells whose long\u2011term availability can be secured over the machine\u2019s lifecycle.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The battery is specified to operate from \u221230\u202f\u00b0C up to +45\u202f\u00b0C. As a result, pre\u2011heating is required in cold conditions, and both the battery structure and auxiliary systems are engineered for safety in extreme operating environments.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In typical light\u2011duty work, the battery can power 5\u20136 hours of operation between charges. On farms, a 50\u2013100 kW charging station is a realistic maximum today, but the chosen chemistry also allows higher charging powers for future needs. A 30\u2011minute charge brings the battery to an optimal state of charge, and overnight slow charging at lower power is practical.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In heavy, draft\u2011type work such as ploughing, motor load can average around 80%, which would require returning to charge every couple of hours\u2014a use case where, for now, a fully electric tractor is not the right fit, Heikkil\u00e4 says.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven as charging rates improve, charging\u2011related interruptions are unacceptable in long, heavy operations. When the weather cooperates, farmers must work efficiently\u2014and the tractor must be available. Fully electric tractors do suit agriculture, but for the time being only in certain power and size classes,\u201d Heikkil\u00e4 reflects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>Electric powertrains bring new benefits for farmers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Electric powertrains in work machines provide clear advantages, including lower operating costs and a driveline that is nearly maintenance\u2011free. Much of the reduced service need comes from replacing the combustion engine with an electric motor\u2014oil changes, for example, become a thing of the past.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Electric implements are still new, as are autonomous solutions in agriculture\u2014areas where electric tractors are a natural fit. Looking ahead, implements currently driven via mechanical PTO shafts can draw electric power directly from the tractor\u2019s battery, opening new possibilities for implement design and improving usability.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t yet know all the usability benefits.
